Deeqo Hassan Cilmi, an elderly resident of Mahaas district in Somalia, was forced to flee her home as escalating conflict between Al-Shabaab and Government forces made daily life increasingly dangerous. Once reliant on livestock and small-scale livelihood activities, Deeqo and her family found their safety and freedom of movement severely restricted, leaving them with no option but to escape in search of protection.
The family undertook a difficult journey to Beledweyne, where they joined thousands of internally displaced people. Arriving with almost no possessions, they faced harsh living conditions characterized by inadequate shelter, limited access to food and clean water, and a lack of basic household items. The absence of essential supplies made it challenging to cook, store water safely, and maintain personal hygiene, further compounding their vulnerability.
Relief came when KAALO provided Deeqo’s household with critical Non-Food Items (NFIs), including jerricans, blankets, sleeping mats, cooking utensils, a plastic sheet, a mosquito net, and a solar lamp. These items enabled the family to safely collect and store water, prepare meals, and sleep in improved conditions, significantly enhancing their safety and well-being.
Although displacement has left lasting challenges, the NFI assistance has restored a measure of dignity and stability to Deeqo’s family. With improved living conditions and basic household support, they are now better able to cope with daily hardships while continuing their journey toward recovery.
Deeqo’s experience highlights the vital role of timely humanitarian assistance in meeting urgent needs and helping displaced families rebuild their lives amid ongoing conflict.
