KAALO’s Emergency and Humanitarian Assistance Sector is dedicated to providing timely, principled, and life-saving support to communities affected by crises across Somalia. Guided by humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, KAALO responds to the urgent needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, returnees, pastoralist communities, and vulnerable host populations facing the impacts of conflict, drought, floods, disease outbreaks, and other emergencies. The sector aims to save lives, reduce suffering, and strengthen the resilience of affected communities during and after humanitarian crises.
A key pillar of KAALO’s emergency response is Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). Through this intervention area, KAALO works to ensure that crisis-affected populations have access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and essential hygiene services. The organization supports emergency water supply systems, rehabilitates water infrastructure, promotes hygiene awareness, and distributes critical hygiene materials to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and improve public health outcomes in emergency settings.
Protection is another critical component of KAALO’s humanitarian programming. The organization is committed to safeguarding the dignity, rights, and well-being of vulnerable individuals and groups, particularly women, children, persons with disabilities, and displaced populations. KAALO implements protection-focused interventions that promote safety, prevent exploitation and abuse, support psychosocial well-being, and strengthen community-based protection mechanisms to ensure that affected populations can access assistance in a safe and dignified manner.
KAALO also addresses immediate and long-term needs through Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) interventions. During emergencies, the organization provides food assistance and livelihood support to households experiencing severe food insecurity. In addition to meeting urgent needs, KAALO promotes recovery and resilience by supporting income-generating activities, livestock-based livelihoods, agricultural production, and other initiatives that help vulnerable families restore their means of survival and reduce dependency on humanitarian aid.
Health and Nutrition interventions form an integral part of KAALO’s emergency response efforts. The organization works to improve access to essential healthcare services and nutrition support for populations affected by crises, particularly children under five, pregnant and lactating women, and other vulnerable groups. Through emergency health services, nutrition screening, treatment of acute malnutrition, health education, and community outreach activities, KAALO contributes to reducing morbidity and mortality while promoting healthier and more resilient communities in times of humanitarian need.
