On World Refugee Day 2026, KAALO Aid and Development proudly joined the global community in commemorating the day in Bosaso, Puntland, under the theme “Until Everyone Is Safe.” The event served as an important platform to recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities while reaffirming the collective commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of people who have been forced to flee their homes.

The commemoration brought together approximately 150 participants, including refugees, internally displaced persons, host community members, government representatives, community leaders, humanitarian actors, and other key stakeholders. The gathering provided an opportunity for meaningful dialogue, awareness raising, and reflection on the challenges faced by displaced populations as well as the progress made toward finding durable and sustainable solutions.

World Refugee Day is observed annually to honor the courage and perseverance of millions of people around the world who have been displaced due to conflict, persecution, violence, climate-related shocks, and other humanitarian crises. In Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region, displacement continues to affect countless families, making it essential for humanitarian and development actors to work together to address immediate needs while supporting long-term resilience and self-reliance.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in discussions highlighting the importance of strengthening protection mechanisms for refugees and displaced communities. Speakers emphasized the need to ensure access to essential services, safeguard human rights, and create inclusive environments where all individuals can live safely and with dignity regardless of their displacement status.

The commemoration also underscored the importance of social cohesion and peaceful coexistence between displaced populations and host communities. Building strong relationships between communities is critical for fostering mutual understanding, reducing vulnerabilities, and creating opportunities for shared development and prosperity.

A key focus of the event was promoting self-reliance and access to opportunities for refugees and displaced people. Participants discussed the importance of education, vocational training, livelihood support, and economic inclusion as pathways to empower individuals and families to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.

Informed decision-making and community participation were also highlighted as essential components of effective humanitarian and development programming. Ensuring that refugees, asylum-seekers, and displaced populations have a voice in decisions that affect their lives helps promote accountability, ownership, and sustainable outcomes.

The event further explored the need for durable and sustainable solutions that enhance dignity, resilience, and social inclusion. Stakeholders reiterated the importance of collaborative action among government institutions, humanitarian organizations, development partners, and local communities to address the root causes of displacement and create pathways toward long-term stability and recovery.

Through awareness-raising activities, community engagement initiatives, and collective dialogue, the World Refugee Day commemoration reinforced the shared responsibility of protecting vulnerable populations and supporting their aspirations for a safer and more secure future. It also highlighted the critical role that partnerships play in advancing humanitarian principles and promoting inclusive development.

As KAALO continues its commitment to serving vulnerable communities across Somalia, the organization remains dedicated to supporting refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons, and host communities through integrated programs that promote protection, resilience, social cohesion, and sustainable livelihoods.

The World Refugee Day 2026 celebration concluded with a renewed call for solidarity and action, reminding all participants that building stronger, more inclusive communities requires collective effort and shared responsibility. Together, we can create a future where every person has the opportunity to live in safety, dignity, and hope, because until everyone is safe, our work is not done.
