In the face of continued insecurity, inter-communal violence, and weak rule of law, the people of Somalia have long struggled to safeguard their lives and livelihoods. Ongoing conflicts, often rooted in competition over resources like land, have displaced entire communities, leaving them vulnerable. However, thanks to the collaborative efforts of KAALO and NCA, significant advances are being made to transform these conflicts into opportunities for peace. The initiative set out to create a peaceful and cohesive Somalia by establishing a local peace structure in the historic town of Birta-dheer, in the Nugal region. The goal: to prevent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence through inclusive, community-driven dialogue.
In Birta-dheer, tensions between two brotherhoods reached a boiling point, fueled by competition over land ownership. These disputes threatened to tear apart the fabric of the local community, disrupting the harmony that had long existed between neighbors. However, the establishment of a local peace structure, with the support of KAALO, local authorities, and the community, has sparked hope for change.
A New Approach to Peacebuilding
The peace structure in Birta-dheer brings together community leaders, local authorities, and mediators to facilitate constructive dialogue between conflicting parties. The approach prioritizes inclusiveness, ensuring that all voices are heard, and that peace is pursued through mutual understanding and collaboration.
“Since we started our mediation process, we first seek acceptance from both parties, and they accepted our message of peace and unity. They welcomed the mediation process to resolve the conflict,” said Farax, a peace mediator and member of the local peace structure in Birta-dheer district.
Farax’s words reflect the spirit of cooperation that is emerging in the village.
“We saw how this new peace structure is having an impact. Dialogue and peaceful coexistence are a major growth area,” he continued.
“Neighboring villagers are interested to know more about how peace structures work and how we resolve rising conflicts, based on what we studied during training and the formulation stage of our team.”
A Ripple Effect of Positive Change
The impact of the local peace structure extends beyond resolving immediate land disputes. It is laying the groundwork for a broader culture of peace and conflict resolution in the region. Through its work, the peace structure has promoted sustainable dialogue, strengthened community resilience, and helped local communities better cope with shocks like insecurity, climate challenges, and economic instability—factors that often exacerbate conflict risks in rural areas.
“The community has grown stronger through this process,” said one local leader, reflecting on the importance of the peace structure.
“This is not just about ending one dispute; it’s about creating a foundation for peace that will endure for generations to come.”
Building a Peaceful Future Together
The success of this initiative in Birta-dheer is a testament to the power of dialogue and mediation in transforming conflict. By focusing on prevention and fostering collaborative peacebuilding, the project is helping to prevent further escalation of disputes and creating opportunities for sustainable peace. The work of KAALO and NCA continues to inspire hope for a peaceful Somalia where communities can coexist and thrive.
This peacebuilding effort in Birta-dheer shows that when communities are given the tools and space to resolve their differences through dialogue, they can build a future free from conflict. The lessons learned here are poised to have a lasting impact, not only in Somalia but also as a model for other conflict-prone regions around the world.
