Dharoor is a rural village located in a drought-prone area where livelihoods are primarily based on pastoralism and small-scale farming. The community depends heavily on livestock and seasonal crop production, making access to reliable water a critical factor for survival and economic stability. Over the years, Dharoor has experienced recurrent droughts, limited water infrastructure, and increasing environmental stress. These challenges have significantly undermined household resilience and heightened vulnerability, particularly among women, children, and pastoralist families.

For many years, access to clean and reliable water remained a major challenge for households, pastoralists, and local farmers. Long distances to water sources, combined with frequent droughts and inadequate infrastructure, placed immense strain on daily life. These conditions negatively affected livestock health, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased the physical and time burden on women and children responsible for water collection.

Through the Diakonia-funded Resilience Project, implemented by KAALO during 2024–2025, KAALO rehabilitated and solarized shallow wells in Dharoor, providing the community with sustainable and accessible water sources located closer to households and farming areas. This intervention has reduced the time and effort required to access water and ensured a more reliable water supply throughout the year.

Pastoralist families now benefit from dependable water for their livestock, which is especially critical during prolonged dry seasons when water scarcity threatens animal survival and household livelihoods. Farmers have also experienced positive change. With improved access to water, crop production has increased, contributing to enhanced household food security and creating opportunities for additional income generation.

The rehabilitation of water infrastructure in Dharoor has addressed both immediate water needs and long-term resilience. This success story demonstrates how strategic investment in sustainable water systems can reduce vulnerability, strengthen livelihoods, and transform lives.

By improving access to water, the project has helped build a more resilient community capable of withstanding recurrent droughts and environmental shocks.
