Access to eye health services remains limited for many children in Qabaal and surrounding communities, where poverty and low awareness often prevent early detection of vision problems. As a result, many students struggle silently in class, unable to see the blackboard clearly, which affects their learning, confidence, and school performance. In most cases, parents are unaware of their children’s eye conditions until they become severe.

To address this gap, the project conducted school-based eye screening campaigns in Budunbuto and other target schools, reaching 150 students. Through the screenings, 100 students were identified as needing vision support and were provided with prescription eyeglasses. The campaign aimed to improve students’ ability to learn by detecting eye problems early and linking children with appropriate treatment.

In Qabaal, the story of Canab Mohamud Muse, a 12-year-old student in Grade Five, highlights the impact of the intervention. Before the eye screening, Canab struggled in class because she could not clearly see the blackboard. Her parents were unaware of her vision problem and believed her academic challenges were unrelated to her eyesight. During the school eye screening, medical professionals identified that Canab had a vision impairment that prevented her from seeing the board while learning. She was provided with a prescription eyeglass, received appropriate eye treatment, and her parents were counseled on the importance of continuous eye monitoring and follow-up care.

After receiving the eyeglasses, Canab’s learning experience changed dramatically. She shared her experience, saying:

“Before, I could not see what the teacher wrote on the board. Now I can see clearly, understand the lesson, and feel happy in class.”

Teachers also observed improvements in her classroom participation and confidence. With improved vision, Canab became more engaged in lessons and better able to follow instructions alongside her classmates. The eye health campaign not only improved individual learning outcomes but also increased awareness among parents, teachers, and communities about the importance of regular eye check-ups for school-aged children. By integrating health services within schools, the project reduced barriers to care and ensured that vulnerable children received timely support.

This intervention demonstrates how simple, low-cost eye health services can have a transformative effect on children’s education. By restoring sight, the project restored confidence, participation, and the opportunity for children like Canab to reach their full potential in school.
