Hawo Abdi Da’ud, a 45-year-old mother of 11, lives with her family in Salama one IDP camp in North Galkayo, Somalia. Forced to flee her home in southern Somalia due to ongoing conflict and insecurity, Hawo’s life was marked by daily struggle. With limited opportunities in the drought-prone Mudug region, she worked as a clothes washer in town, barely earning enough to feed her children.

Despite her background in farming, Hawo believed agriculture was no longer an option in such harsh conditions — until she joined the TERRA Project, implemented by BRCiS and funded by SIDA. Through this initiative, Hawo received hands-on training in Resilience Design (RD), an innovative approach that equips communities to grow food sustainably, even in dry and degraded environments. She was also provided with seeds, tools, and materials to establish her own Perma Garden.

With determination and newly acquired skills, Hawo began cultivating vegetables right in the camp. Each week, she harvests spinach, tomatoes and onion for her family’s meals and sells the surplus to neighbors — sharing any extra with those in need. Her garden not only improved her family’s nutrition but also became a source of income and dignity.

Inspired by her success, Hawo completed a Training of Trainers (ToT) program and now works as a community extension worker. She supports other displaced women and families in establishing home gardens, fostering food security and hope throughout the camp.

“This training gave me confidence. Now I help others grow their own food. I believe women can lead change in their communities”, Hawo said.

Today, Hawo is more than a survivor — she’s a mentor, leader, and changemaker. Her transformation underscores the power of targeted support, practical training, and local leadership in building resilient communities.

“Thanks to BRCiS and SIDA, I’ve rebuilt my livelihood — and regained my hope” Hawo stated.
