A significant milestone has been achieved in Badhan District under the Dawlad-wanaag Project through the successful implementation of one of the key action points identified and agreed upon through the Inclusive Social Accountability (ISA) process. The initiative focused on improving urban planning and reopening blocked roads, marking an important step toward enhancing public infrastructure, accessibility, and sustainable urban development within the district.

The accomplishment reflects the power of collaboration and collective action among government institutions, private sector actors, community representatives, and development partners. Through a shared commitment to addressing local development priorities, stakeholders worked together to identify challenges facing the district and implement practical solutions that respond to community needs.

The road reopening and urban planning initiative was made possible through the strong partnership and coordination of the Badhan District Local Government, the ISA District Working Group, the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Interior, KAALO Aid and Development, Ceel Dahir Company, the communities of Badhan, and Badhan Electricity Company (BECO). Their joint efforts demonstrate the effectiveness of inclusive governance approaches in promoting sustainable and community-driven development.

For many years, blocked roads and limited urban planning posed challenges to mobility, access to services, and the orderly growth of the district. Through extensive consultations, community engagement, and collaborative planning, stakeholders were able to identify priority areas for intervention and implement actions that directly contribute to improving the urban environment.

The reopening of roads has significantly enhanced accessibility and connectivity across the district, allowing residents to move more easily between neighborhoods and access essential services, markets, businesses, and public facilities. Improved road networks also contribute to economic development by facilitating trade, transportation, and social interaction within the community.

Beyond improving mobility, the initiative supports broader urban development objectives by creating a more organized, inclusive, and sustainable urban landscape. Effective urban planning plays a critical role in ensuring that communities can accommodate growth while maintaining access to public spaces, infrastructure, and essential services for all residents.

The achievement further highlights the importance of citizen participation and social accountability in local governance. Through the Inclusive Social Accountability process, community members were provided with a platform to engage with local authorities, voice their concerns, identify development priorities, and contribute to decision-making processes that directly affect their lives.

The collaborative effort has strengthened trust and cooperation between local government institutions and the communities they serve. By working together to address common challenges, stakeholders have demonstrated how participatory governance can produce tangible results and improve the quality of life for citizens.

The Dawlad-wanaag Project continues to promote accountable governance, community engagement, and responsive service delivery across Puntland. By fostering partnerships between government institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, and local communities, the project aims to support sustainable development and strengthen local governance systems.

As Badhan District celebrates this important achievement, the success serves as a powerful example of how inclusive dialogue, collective responsibility, and community-driven action can transform local priorities into meaningful development outcomes. Together, stakeholders are building a stronger foundation for sustainable urban growth, improved public services, and a better future for present and future generations.

This activity was implemented under the Dawlad-wanaag Project with support from VNG International and the Somalia Stability Fund, reaffirming a shared commitment to strengthening local governance and promoting sustainable development across Puntland.
